Slightly lower rates for Eneco heat in 2025

Customers who are connected to one of Eneco’s heating grids will pay less in 2025 than in 2024. The variable rate will drop by €1.02 compared with this year, to €43.79 per gigajoule (GJ) for 2025. Eneco’s fixed rates will remain virtually unchanged for 2025. This means that Eneco’s fixed and variable rates for next year match the rates permitted by law, as established for 2025 by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM). 

Lower variable rate 

In 2025, an average household that uses 21 GJ of heat will pay around €22 less consumption costs on a yearly basis. The reason for this drop is that gas prices have gone down this year compared to last year. Rates for heating are established annually by the ACM, based on the principle of ‘no more than otherwise’ (in Dutch: niet-meer-dan-anders, or NMDA) relative to natural gas. If gas prices drop, the variable heat rate also goes down.  

Fixed costs not changing 

The ACM has adjusted the standing charges for 2025 to a lower rate. The metering fee and the cost of renting a delivery set are slightly higher. Eneco’s costs of maintaining its heating grids and heat assets and making them more sustainable continue to rise. At the same time, the demand for heat has dropped sharply over the past three years. Given these developments, Eneco has decided to charge the maximum rates permitted by the ACM for 2025. As a result, the total fixed costs for the company’s heating customers next year will remain virtually unchanged.

The NMDA principle 

Under the Dutch Heating Act (Warmtewet), the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) establishes maximum rates based on the principle of ‘no more than otherwise’ (in Dutch: niet-meer-dan-anders, or NMDA), where the rates are compared with the price of natural gas. This means that heating customers should pay no more for heat than they would in a similar home set-up with a central heating boiler that runs on gas.
