FlevoBESS to realise largest Dutch battery in 2025

At the end of 2025, FlevoBESS will take the largest battery in the Netherlands into operation, with a capacity of 31.6MW/126.4MWh. Preparations are already underway for its construction. It will be built on a site situated immediately beside the Windplan Groen transformer station in Dronten, where the electricity produced by a number of local wind farms is brought together in a closed distribution system. A loan agreement was signed with ASN Bank in December 2024. Under a long-term contract with Eneco, the energy company will use the battery to manage differences in supply and demand on the energy markets for sustainable electricity.

The FlevoBESS battery is part of the Dronter Energie Opslag battery park. A total of three batteries will be realised there, each with a capacity of 31.6MW, to make even better use of the wind energy produced by the connected wind farms. Eneco will control the FlevoBESS battery, storing surplus electricity to draw on at times when not enough electricity is produced. This increases the number of hours that the turbines can operate, and makes efficient use of the sustainable electricity that they produce.

Local partnership
The initiative behind the battery’s development comes from the local wind farms. With more than 400 local shareholders, including people who live in the project’s immediate vicinity, FlevoBESS is a local partnership intended to boost the use of sustainable energy. The battery will have a capacity similar to the daily energy used by around 23,000 households
