Energy management at home: sustainable and affordable

In this white paper Eneco advocates for government policy to help households shift their electricity use patterns and introduces a new off-peak contract: Eneco VoordeelMomenten.

 

Households have the potential to make a key difference in the available capacity of the country’s electrical grids. In most cases it is not difficult for them to shift their electricity use from the morning and evening peaks to off-peak moments. This will have an immediate positive impact on grid congestion and to make better use of sustainable electricity. However, improving access to smart energy consumption will need to be encouraged by government policy. To add a financial incentive, Eneco will introduce a new type of contract for off-peak energy consumption in the summer of 2025: Eneco VoordeelMomenten

Eneco’s latest white paper (only in Dutch) discusses why and how households should help to reduce grid congestion by shifting their electricity use to off-peak moments between 10am and 5pm and between 10pm and 5am. With this in mind, Eneco advocates for government policy to:

  • improve the rules and regulations about sharing energy data;
  • remove the VAT on home batteries;
  • create the possibility of a flex bonus for controllable devices.

 

Energy suppliers and grid operators can also encourage households by offering financial incentives for shifting energy consumption patterns. To find out more, read the white paper (only in Dutch).

Eneco VoordeelMomenten
To give concrete shape to the financial benefits of shifting electricity use patterns, Eneco will introduce a new type of contract in the summer of 2025: Eneco VoordeelMomenten. This contract form gives the customer two fixed electricity rates for a year. One is a low rate between 10am and 5pm and between 10pm and 5am, when more green electricity is generally available and less is being used. This rate is 30% lower than the bare rate that the customer pays at other times. Eneco VoordeelMomenten provides the security of fixed rates, plus the possibility of an immediate financial benefit for the customer’s energy bill from smart energy use. 

Households with an Eneco Voordeelmomenten contract will be able to reduce their energy bill compared with a regular one-year contract, with savings ranging from €30 to €230. The precise amount depends on how much electricity the household uses for its appliances and devices. The easiest way to save money is by using the dishwasher, washing machine or dryer at off-peak times. Further savings can be realised by shifting the times for using a heat pump or electrical vehicle.
