Eneco to supply all Dutch residential and small business customers with Norwegian gas

Eneco will supply all its Dutch residential and small business customers with natural gas from Norway under a new five-year agreement with Equinor. It reflects Eneco’s ambition to improve Europe’s  security of energy supply and helps reduce the CO2e footprint from gas production and transport.

In the current geopolitical situation, Eneco aims to contribute to a secure and reliable energy supply for Europe. Norwegian gas plays an important role in this, as is evident from this long-standing collaboration between Equinor and Eneco. Gas supplies under the agreement already started on October first, customers will not notice any difference: the delivery and tariffs will continue as before.

The contracted Norwegian gas has the benefit of having an 11,8%* lower CO₂e footprint from production and transport compared to the average Dutch natural gas supplied in 2025 to residential and business customers through the G-gas network. This is mainly because the gas under the contract is produced and transported using renewable power from shore and delivered by pipeline to the Netherlands, rather than as liquified natural gas transported by tankers.

“We’re dedicated to building a future that’s based on sustainable energy. At the same time, many households and small businesses still rely on natural gas. Thanks to this agreement we can supply Norwegian gas to all these customers and take a step forward in a secure and reliable energy supply for Europe,” explains Selina Thurer, Board Member focussed on customers.

“Equinor is committed to being a long-term and reliable supplier of energy to Europe. We believe in long-term partnerships with our customers, and I am pleased that we have signed another agreement with Eneco. The agreement underlines how European customers value Norwegian gas for its reliability, European origin and comparatively low emissions footprint,” says Helle Østergaard Kristiansen, senior vice president for Gas & Power at Equinor.

Attributes SA’s digital platform provides tracking of Equinor’s emissions data to Eneco, based on data reported to and published by Norwegian authorities. The data is verified by an independent accounting firm. More information is available at Attributes | Energy Traceability.

*The calculation of the CO2e footprint is based on total lifecycle emissions (extraction, transport, combustion) using emission factors from CO2-emissiefactoren.nl. This is the Dutch standard for CO₂ calculations, for which Royal Haskoning performs the underlying lifecycle emission calculations for natural gas. The difference between the Dutch natural gas mix and the gas supplied by Equinor is determined annually. The current comparison is based on 2025. There is no difference in emissions during gas consumption, but there is a difference regarding the extraction and transport of the Norwegian gas.
